West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions, breaking away from Virginia during the American Civil War. The new state was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state, and was one of only two states formed during the American Civil War (the other one being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).
West Virginia became the site of a mysterious tragedy when the mining community of Grantville simply vanished on April 2, 2000. There were no signs of natural disaster. However, burned out farmhouses were found where Grantville should have been, as well as a substantial acreage of grass that was not native to that part of the state.
In truth, Grantville had fallen victim to the Assiti Shards effect, and had been transported to Germany in the year 1631. The shift caused the creation of a new universe. Only a biologist named Hank Tapper came close to figuring this out.
