The Third Division of the USE Army was founded in 1635 and led by newly-appointed general Michael Stearns and former Prime Minister, after the general elections of 1635.

The Third Division took part in the Eastern war and won two major battles. Although it did not fight in the Battle of Lake Bledno, its arrival led Stanisław Koniecpolski to leave the field.

In Świebodzin, soldiers of the Gray Adder Regiment were involved in war crimes against civilians. After those incidents, Major General Stearns founded the Hangman Regiment.

The Third Division was then sent to defend Bohemia, but Stearns and his officers realized that was just a pretext to get the division out of the USE and into a place where it could not readily interfere with Axel Oxenstierna. Therefore, Stearns made plans to move back into Saxony and act against Johan Banér if that became necessary. In February of 1636, the Third Division relieved the siege of Dresden and defeated Banér at the Battle of Ostra.
