The Flag of Sweden in 1632

Prior to the Thirty Years' War, Sweden was a re-made into a strong Protestant nation by the ascension of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, who had modernized Sweden's military. Sweden entered into the European conflict: in the support of the German Lutherans; to forestall Catholic aggression against Sweden, and; to obtain economic influence in the German states around the Baltic Sea. In addition, Gustavus was concerned about the growing power of the Holy Roman Empire.

Following the arrival of the American town of Grantville, Sweden became instrumental in forming the Confederated Principalities of Europe and later its successor, the United States of Europe. (While Sweden and the CPoE/USE were linked through Gustavus' dual roles as King and Emperor, Sweden was not part of the CPoE or USE.)

The country engaged the newly established League of Ostend and was successful in defeating one of its member nations and Scandinavian rival, Denmark, which Sweden absorbed into the historical Union of Kalmar.

By 1635, the economical problems of Sweden have been solved as the technologies and resources from the USE have turned Sweden into one of the richest countries in Europe. Finland would remain part of Sweden for a long time
