Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was an English military and political leader best known for his involvement in making England into a republican Commonwealth and for his later role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland. He was one of the commanders of the New Model Army which defeated the royalists in the English Civil War. After the execution of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell dominated the short-lived Commonwealth of England, conquered Ireland and Scotland, and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658 from (presumably) septicaemia.

In 1633, Oliver Cromwell was an insignificant political figure with decades to go before his historical role as Lord Protector. Soon after King Charles I read copies of Grantville's history books concerning Charles' overthrow and execution, Cromwell was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. His wife and son Richard were killed during his arrest. Despite his isolation in the Tower's dungeons, up-timers also held captive smuggled Cromwell a hand-held radio, allowing him to communicate with the Grantville delegation. Cromwell and the Grantville delegation were rescued in 1634 by Harry Lefferts. After being freed, Cromwell traveled north to Scotland with Alexander and Julie Mackay, Darryl McCarthy, Gayle Mason and several others.
