Marty Craig was a middle school custodian. He was particularly a nice person and, after the Ring of Fire, first met and befriended Jurgen Neubert while attending night school just after coming to Grantville. After his sister Connie murdered her brother-in-law Tommy Cooper, Jr. in self-defense, a strong resentment was built between Marty's family and the Cooper's, most coming from the latter.
Marty and his grandmother Peggy came to a civil disturbance between the Coopers and the police, which included Officers Jurgen Neubert and Marvin Tipton, over the absence of Crystal and Zachary Cooper. Both Marty and Peggy resolved the situation in which they explained to the officers that the Cooper's grandchildren were attending a field trip at Buffalo Creek and that Connie had sent a letter to the Coopers as a notice to this, which they had carelessly thrown away. Later on, Marty came to the defense of Wendel Schultz and embroiled in a fracas with the bar patrons from the Club 250. The patrons had erroneously concluded that Schultz had kidnapped Crystal, in front of Marty's house. Things were calmed down by the arrival of Neubert and Tipton.
