Johann Matthaeus "Matz" Meyfarth, was a Lutheranism pastor and Duke Johann Casimir's point man for squelching witchcraft persecutions. In December, 1632, Meyfarth traveled to Franconia with the Commission for the Establishment of Religious Freedom to diffuse the witchcraft persecution hysteria that is running rampant in the region. Meyfarth was actually convinced into traveling to Franconia with the promise of being offer of a tenured professorship at the University of Erfurt - if he survived the experience.

In February, 1633, Meyfarth was directed by Steve Salatto to Bamberg to lecture the American staff stationed there about Kronach and its troubling and violent history that is prevailing in the region against Protestant forces.
