David Kendall was an employee of Foxhall's Foundary before and during the War of 1812. He was Henry Crowell supervisor for a time, before Crowell left the foundary to become a teamster. During that time, Crowell helped save Kendall's life after a long rod of solid iron called a blank rolled onto his leg. In August, 1814, as Captain Sam Houston prepared to defend the Capitol Building, he ordered Crowell and several dragoons to collect as much shot and gunpowder as they could from the foundary. When Kendall heard of the plan, he was very cooperative in providing Crowell's party with what they needed.
