The Battle of Rain (also called the Battle of the River Lech or Battle of Lech) was fought on April 15, 1632, during the Thirty Years' War. It was the second meeting between Count Tilly and Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. Tilly lost when Gustavus forced the Lech River under the cover of his artillery. Tilly was fatally injured, and carried off the field. His second-in-command, Johann von Aldringer briefly took control, but was knocked unconcious. Finally, Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria personally ordered a retreat.

Battle of Rain in 1632

The Battle of Rain took place much as it did in the original timeline. While a delegation from the New United States was present, and had brought new artillery pieces, Gustavus Adolphus's victory was nearly identical.

American soldiers Tom Simpson, his wife Rita and Julie Sims were present in what was generally an advisory position. The Simpsons oversaw the use of the American guns to an extent, but overall command remained with Lennart Torstensson. His men, used to their own guns, had to compensate for the extra range of the new guns, which they were eventually able to do.

Sims brought her marksmanship to bear. Initially, Gustavus was doubtful of the young woman's skill, but was soon proven wrong, as Sims consistently hit her target. Gustavus also allowed Sims to pick off skirmishers attacking his engineers as they built a bridge across the river.

However, despite these subtle advantages, the battle unfolded as it did in the original universe. Count Tilly was fatally wounded in the leg by a cannonball. Johann von Aldringer initially took command, but was knocked unconscious. Maximilian I of Bavaria finally ordered the retreat, cursing Gustavus and announcing his intention to leave him to Albrecht von Wallenstein.
